PRSA meeting in Johnson City

Thursday, February 16th, 2006

Thomas and I just spoke at the regional Public Relations event in Johnson City, TN. We presented on blogging and podcasting 101. It was a great meeting with about 40 PR professionals from regional companies like Eastman , Bristol Motor Speedway , Tri-Cities Regional Airport , and a host of others. Thanks to all the great questions and feel free to post here with further questions or comments.

Here is the pdf BloggingPodcasting101.pdf with the notes from the presentation.

Geeks of the Mountain South!

Thursday, December 15th, 2005

From thinkjose
It’s official! The geek dinner-get together has become a reality and our first one is next week. Wednesday December 21, 7pm at Panera Bread in Johnson City, TN.

So bring your laptop for the free wireless, your thoughts to share on everything blog-podcast-geekdom, and your contact info to share with other like minded tech savvy folks. I will be sharing some ideas on podcasting and the internet as a way to build a network of like-minded people.

I have set up a writeboard
(password: panera) to catalog who is coming so we can prepare nametags and some other potential goodies to give away. Click the link, enter the password, edit the page with your name and link, and then show up on Wed. Also please let us know if you have anyone interested in possibly sponsoring future events.

Thanks and I would like to thank Austin, Tim, and Jeff for their support in getting this together.

See you on Wednesday!

Sprint Strike Ends

Monday, December 12th, 2005

The strike against Sprint in the Tri-Cities has come to an end (story here). Union leaders came to an agreement with company officials regarding back-to-work issues. Union members did indeed vote on the contract on Friday, and it was approved by a “close margin.” From what I hear, Sprint employees are not at all happy about the new contract; I get the impression that most voted on it just to end this long two-month ordeal. One employee from Johnson City told the Times-News, “It’s a big corporation, and I guess we’re outnumbered is what it broke down to.” I believe that national CWA officials did fail the workers; they treated every strike across the nation on an individual basis. This gave the union less power in bargaining. If they would have kept all members on strike until everyone got a contract; Sprint might have been more willing to give more. You don’t have much power using 300 some people to fight against a muli-million dollar corporation. You do have power, however, when you use thousands! Hopefully the union will treat this as a lesson and will come up with a better strategy next time around.
