Podcasting in the Tri-Cities

Saturday, December 10th, 2005

By Jeff Rainey
The Tri-Cities (Bristol, Kingsport, Johnson City - TN) area is fortunate enough to have its share of podcast shows to choose from. For those of you who do not yet know what a podcast is, wikipedia defines podcast as “… a collection of technologies for automatically distributing audio programs over the Internet using a publisher/subscriber model… Podcasting enables independent producers to create self-published, syndicated “shows,” and gives broadcast radio or television programs a new distribution method.” And, to clear up any confusion, you do not need an iPod to listen to a Podcast (though I highly reccomend it). Anyway, I currently know of three local Podcasts right now.

Bandwagon Radio is a show comprised of three guys discussing amusing and entertaining news stories of the week. The show is comical and recorded well. You can find out more about Bandwagon Radio (recorded weekly) at jumponthebandwagon.net

Another “blue-ribbon” show recorded here in the Tri-Cities is Lockjaw Radio (recorded weekly) In each “dose,” Jose Castillo and Thomas Eorgan discuss current corporate marketing campaigns, branding, idea generation and new media in a fun lighthearted fashion.

The GoTriCities Podcast (not sure about schedule) features David Cate and a guest band as they chat about the local music scene, the artists inspirations and projects they are currently working on. Sound bites (or bytes) from the musicians are also included in the recording.

Please inform me if you know of other podcasts in the Tri-Cities TN/VA area. This is an exciting new movement and I am glad to see our area’s contributions.

Raptors Go Regional

Saturday, December 10th, 2005

From Raptors Blog
Sorry about the silence. We have been working very hard to complete our task of re-branding the Greeneville Raptors to the Tennessee Raptors. There is still some work left to be done, however we are far enough along to at least inform those of you who are not aware. Here’s the scoop… Management collectively decided that it was in our teams best interest, to fully take advantage of the territorial rights to the tri-cities region. As the Tennessee Raptors, we are now Johnson City, Bristol, Kingsport and Greeneville’s team.

Thanks Jama for the info.

By Jama
While the 278th has received a wonderful welcome home from Iraq, it was recently brought to my attention by Dustin Goforth (ETSU student and SGA member) that our local Lima Company has also recently returned from service in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Best in the State!

Friday, November 11th, 2005

In case you missed today’s Kingsport Times-News article, the Tri-Cities region has been selected as the 77th best place to live in the United States and has also been chosen as the best place to live in Tennessee. This ranking comes from the 2005 Sperling’s Best Places list. Our lovely area ranked above some of Tennessee’s major cities, such as Nashville and Knoxville. Sperling cited our area as having a low cost of living, low crime rate, low commute times, and wonderful climate; the publishers only mentioned a lack of culture and art activity in the region, which was redeemed by cultural events at nearby colleges. If you are from the Tri-Cities, today is your day to shine! Be proud to live in the greatest metro area in Tennessee!

Sprint Workers on Strike

Friday, November 4th, 2005

Be sure to support your local Sprint-Nextel strikers! If you are from the Tri-Cities and a few other areas on the East Coast, you might have heard that Sprint workers have gone on strike. I want everyone to not misunderstand the situation. Don’t think that these workers are lazy or just want to cause problems; these hard-working people are just the opposite. These employees have worked hard everyday for this billion-dollar corporation. After their labor and dedication, the company decides that the employees do not deserve the benefits that they have worked so hard for and was included in the contract that just expired. The union of workers, however, do not want the contract changed at all; they don’t want anything extra. Sprint, on the other hand, wants to replace retiring workers with contractors, cut contributions to 401(k) retirement plans, eliminate extra pay for work on Sundays, and shorten the length of short-term disability. Myself, I think these are benefits that should be expected from any company! These employees deserve respect for their hard work; they shouldn’t have to bargain away what they have rightfully earned! My mother happens to work for Sprint and has done so for around 30 years. I know first hand that this disrespect from Sprint is not a sudden occurrence; for years, the company has been treating their employees with dishonor. Every three years that the contract has to be renewed, the union is always on the verge of striking before a last minute deal falls through. These employees, however, continue to work hard despite the disrespect that they have been receiving for a few years now. The company has become more focused on profits and less on customer and employee satisfaction. If you see a Sprint employee on strike, support them in any way that you can. All they are doing is trying to gain the respect that they have spent many years working hard to earn. And if you are a contractor, please don’t cross the picket line; respect them and their cause. If you would like to send a message of support, you can contact the CWA at jmiller(at)cwa-union(dot)org. To send a message to Sprint-Nextel, investorrelations.sprintcom@mail.sprint.com. If you would like to help with the strike, you are more welcome to join them at the picket line; I did last weekend. (story here, union info here, Sprint-Nextel here)

Guard unit to return through Camp Shelby
By Ashley Rowland
Staff Writer

Members of the 278th Regimental Combat Team will begin returning from Iraq to a Mississippi military base this month, even though many of their families can’t find vacant hotel rooms there.

The 278th is scheduled to return to Camp Shelby, 26 miles from Hattiesburg, Miss. However, Hurricane Katrina evacuees and emergency and construction workers have filled the South Mississippi city’s hotel rooms and campgrounds and set up tent cities there.

Tennessee National Guard spokesman Randy Harris said Fort Bliss, Texas, was the only other military base that could have accepted the 278th. Officials decided it was too far away, and Camp Shelby was prepared to handle the group’s paperwork, medical examinations and the return of sensitive equipment, he said.

“It’s just the logical thing to do,” he said.

Tri-Cities ranks highest in Tennessee in 2005 Best Places Guide

Monday, October 17th, 2005

By Jeff Fleming

The Kingsport Convention & Visitors Bureau’s marketing and promotional material dubs the region: “Tennessee’s Bright Spot”. Justifiably so. A recent national study ranked Tri-Cities as the best place to live in Tennessee and among the best in the nation.

IT’S GOLFING TIME IN TENNESSEE

Friday, October 14th, 2005

From Deliverance
Alright, you hackers and duffers out there–quit swinging long enough to take a look at the number 2 position in this ranking (scroll down).

Metrogolfmap1Golf Digest magazine conducted a survey that ranked 330 Metropolitan Statistical Areas across the country for access to golf (45% of the score), the value (15%), the quality (15%) of golf and the weather (25%). Our own Upper East Tennessee is only behind the Auburn/Opelika Alabama MSA. Number two out of 330!

The living and the golf in East Tennessee is good. But I knew that all along. Now the rest of you do too.
