Cheerleading story blows up in the blogosphere

Friday, February 3rd, 2006

It seems everyone is talking now about East Tennessee State University (ETSU) former cheerleader Kimberly Sams. Sams said that she had been kicked off of the ETSU cheerleading squad because of her employment at Hooters. Below are some teasers and links to some bloggers weighing in on the matter. So, what do you think? Leave a comment or simply vote in the poll in the right column of this blog.

I’ll Take What I Can Get - Hooters girls can’t be cheerleaders.
I don’t see a difference between wearing a skimpy cheerleading outfit and a skimpy waitress uniform. Whats the difference between shaking your ass in front of thousands of fans or in front of a few guys for a bigger tip? At least she’s getting paid at Hooters. more…

ZCT one sixty eight - Hooters Cheerleader Booted
Now call me an idiot, but this sounds like a pile of crap to me. Here is a girl who represents her mediocre college by putting on a tight fitting top and mini skirt and jiggles around while some boys play sport. But when she puts on a similar uniform, but with a pair of less revealing shorts, this is deemed unacceptable? more…

Mrs. Media Matters - Hooters Girl Kicked Off University Cheerleading Squad
Oh you know what give me a break. If you have the boobs for the job and can make decent tips why not do it. College is expensive. It’s not like she is stripping. She is a waitress. Everything is an issue today it really is ridiculous. more…

Lady Kaylee’s Chronicles - OK what is wrong with this picture?
oh Puh-leeze! I suppose she was chosen for the cheerleading squad solely on her academic record and not at all because of her looks? I suppose she is expected to be independently wealthy so she doesn’t need a part time job? I suppose she doesn’t need to work to learn work habits, ethics and skills? And mostly I now know that most of what I assumed about Tennessee is sadly true. more…

Riehl World View - That’s Downright Unamerican
No, this time it isn’t the NAACP … it’s East Tennessee State University. SInce when does working at Hooters mean you can’t be a cheerleader????? Who cares about her grades. more…

Sanguine et Purpure - Proper Dress?
A freshman at East Tennessee State University says she was kicked off the cheerleading squad because its coach objected to her job at a local Hooters, part of a chain of restaurants that features waitresses dressed as, well, cheerleaders. more…

ETSU vs Hooters

Thursday, February 2nd, 2006

From Hyperliterature
East Tennessee State University recently kicked a cheerleader off their cheer squad for working at Hooters. Apparently, they didn’t think that employment at Hooters was a very noble thing and quickly sought to disassociate themselves from the unrefined waitress. Click here for the full story.

Smith records first ever ETSU triple-double

Tim Smith records the first Triple-Double in school history

ETSU and Kennesaw State played tonight in what was probably the most exciting game this season in Johnson City as ETSU won 110-74 over conference leader Kennesaw State. ETSU has now won 10 out of their last 11 games and finally seem to be displaying what they can do with the immense amount of talent that they have.

This was a game that saw six technical fouls, two ejections, many ETSU dunks, and possibly most importantly the very first triple double for an ETSU player as Tim Smith scored 21 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds. Considering all of the basketball talent that ETSU has had throughout the whole 91 years of the program, a guy standing only 5’9 was able to earn the first triple double in the school’s history is a very impressive feat.

There was another first at the game tonight, at least for me, which was the first time I had ever seen two players get ejected from an ETSU home game. Ben Rhoda of ETSU and Ronnell Wooten of Kennesaw both got ejected from the game after Wooten threw an elbow at Rhoda and Rhoda retaliated by pushing him. It was quick and was broken up immediately, however it added to the excitement of the game and provided a mixture of boos, cheers, and profanities from the fans as Wooten from Kennesaw walked off the court.

All in all this was by far the most exciting game of the season for the 4,663 that showed up for the game and was without question the best performance from ETSU all season long. ETSU finally seems to be playing the basketball that they are capable of playing every game and it is coming at the right time as the A-Sun tournament is only about 4 weeks away and with the tourney being played in JC, the Bucs chances for an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament seem be looking bright.

ETSU Basketball vs. Marshall University

Wednesday, November 30th, 2005

From Eric’s Blog
Last night I was able to attend the first ETSU home regular season basketball game to watch the Bucs lay the smack down on C-USA opponent Marshall 91-63.

I was very surprised that ETSU won by such a large margin. They came out and just jumped all over the Thundering Herd who had absolutely no answer for ETSU at all!

Freshman Courtney Pigram stole the show by hitting 6-8 on 3-pointers and scoring 20 points in only 19 minutes of play! However, the highlight of the night goes to Sophomore Andrew Reed who slammed home a put back shot towards the end of the game. Damn, Andrew Reed is one exciting player to watch, he is out there playing with a cast on due to a broken wrist during the preseason, and he is playing like there is not a thing wrong with him.
